The ‘Internet of Humanity’

Sep 29,2015 - Last updated at Sep 29,2015

The threats of terror, extremism and fanaticism are wreaking havoc on several parts of the Middle East, and threatening many other parts of the world.

The whole civilised world should come together to defeat these threats, now spearheaded by “khawarej”, or outlaws of Islam.

This call was reiterated by His Majesty King Abdullah on Monday in his address to the United Nations General Assembly 70th session, attended by US President Barack Obama, Russian President Vladimir Putin and other world leaders.

In the address, the King detailed seven steps to promote tolerance and coexistence in the face of extremism, calling for a multi-pronged effort to defeat extremists and terrorists who, thanks to modern-age information technology means, are spreading their message and war globally.

Henceforth, a global effort is needed to fight this danger, spearheaded by Muslim nations, who are the biggest victims of khawarej and their sympathisers.

Any such global effort should not be waged only militarily, but also ideologically.

“… make no mistake; the more important war is the one we wage on the battlegrounds of the heart, soul and mind. And in this fight, all countries, all people, must come together,” the King emphasised in his address, as he did during his many meetings with world leaders on the sidelines of the General Assembly meeting.

The world needs to build on Jordan’s efforts in this regard, started some years ago, including the Amman Message and A Common Word, in addition to Jordan’s effort in convening the UN Global Interfaith Harmony Week.

These efforts are based on the sublime principles of Islam and other world religions that promote love, peace, justice and compassion, said King Abdullah.

In detailing the seven steps needed to defeat extremism and terrorism, the King urged the world community to work together as one human family and to build what His Majesty termed as the “Internet of Humanity”, describing it as “a hyper-connection, bringing us together in collective consciousness and common cause”.

It is indeed time that the world community comes together, transcending all differences, to work on cementing common values that serve the best interests of humanity.

This is a long-term endeavour that should be started at the soonest to serve all shared values and objectives of peace, harmony among world nations and progress for all.
