Memorable World Cup

Jul 16,2018 - Last updated at Jul 16,2018

The 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia came to an exciting but predictable end on Sunday in Moscow, when France defeated the underdog team of Croatia by 4 to 2 with heavy rain suddenly pouring down on players and spectators alike.

By all counts, Russia 2018 was the best World Cup in history. FIFA President Gianni Infantino did not exaggerate when he commented at the end of the Sunday's final match that the World Cup in Russia is the best international football tournament ever.

The Russian government did a superb job in holding the World Cup in different Russian cities and deserves much praise and credit for organising the best-ever World Cup matches, which started on June 14 and ended on July 15 without a hitch or blemish.

To be sure, this year's World Cup was full of surprises though, as highly prized teams such as Brazil, Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Portugal, Columbia, Russia and the UK saw their teams losing, often by sheer luck and by penalty strikes.

The Russian team made a spectacular show of strength and professionalism, only to lose to Croatia at the near end of the tournaments by just a penalty goal. Spain was eliminated by Russia earlier on, also by a penalty goal. The same fate struck the Columbia team when it also lost to England by a penalty strike. Another major upset was the loss of Brazil, once a favourite team to win the World Cup, to Belgium. Losing by knockout rounds does not seem fair, but that's the way football matches end sometimes.

All in all, the World Cup in Russia was a very exciting and entertaining month. It brought peoples together and highlighted sports as means to promoting understanding and tolerance between diverse peoples.

Thank you, Russia, for pulling off a memorable World Cup.
