Oasis of peace in a troubled region

Feb 19,2018 - Last updated at Feb 19,2018

The whole country must have breathed a sigh of relief when the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army (JAF) recently foiled an attempt by a group of outlaws to smuggle in weapons, drugs and even terrorists through Jordan's borders with Syria.

The Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported on Saturday that the aborted attempt planned to use the old and deserted oil Trans-Arabian Pipeline, which crosses the Jordanian-Syrian border, to smuggle contraband, weapons and armed terrorists into the country. The scheme, however, was thwarted in time by the armed forces, which acted upon intelligence information gathered by JAF's Department of Military Intelligence.

This is not the first time that Jordan has interrupted a flow of arms, drugs or even terrorists across its borders and it, probably, will not be the last. Most countries face similar dangers, with various degrees of success in stopping them in time before they shake their domestic security and stability.

It is, therefore, one thing to rejoice and take comfort with the successful interruption of this latest terrorist plan, and quite another to panic about national security and stability by exaggerating its lasting effect on national security.

After all, the ultimate aim of those trying to bring into the country armed terrorists, drugs or any other illegal product is to instill fear among the people over their safety and infuse doubt in their confidence in their country’s stability.

Probably, one of their goals is to disturb business confidence and disrupt the economic development of the country. Jordan remains an oasis of peace and safety in a region troubled by armed conflicts and tensions.

Jordan is, therefore, the envy of neighbouring countries, and its "enemies" would want nothing more than to distort the Kingdom's image and damage its reputation as stable and peaceful.

As long as citizens comprehend the aims and objectives of these conspiracies, all such designs will come to naught for sure.
