Strengthening already solid ties

Oct 13,2015 - Last updated at Oct 13,2015

French Prime Minister Manuel Valls’ recently concluded visit to Amman for talks with His Majesty King Abdullah and other high-level officials came at a time the region is witnessing many conflicts and unrest.

The French official could not have described Jordanian-French relations better than when he said, at the end of his visit, that “solidarity, trust and commitment” characterise Jordanian-French relations, and that the Kingdom’s security and stability are a major priority for France.

Expressing appreciation for Jordan’s assistance to the Syrian refugees, the prime minister also said that the Kingdom must not be left to carry this burden alone.

Besides refugees, His Majesty also discussed with the visiting official the armed conflict in Syria and the fast-deteriorating situation in the West Bank where a restive population under the cruel Israeli occupation seems ready to start a third Intifada.

Politically, the two leaders agree on a way of tackling the region’s crises.

Closer to home, during Valls’ visit, three major soft-loan agreements were signed to finance infrastructure, water and energy projects in the Kingdom.

Paris is a major player in international and Middle Eastern affairs, and France’s position on the Palestinian, Syrian and Iraqi situations is critical to the region.

The French prime minister no doubt left the area with deeper appreciation and knowledge of what needs to be done to  contain and then solve Middle Eastern conflicts.

The Arab world has always looked to France for support when faced with dangers and threats, and the visit of the French prime minister will undoubtedly strengthen this trust and the solidarity between the two sides.
