Under cover of terror

Nov 20,2015 - Last updated at Nov 20,2015

At a time the international community is busy planning to combat acts of terrorism worldwide, mobilising collective efforts for this goal especially in the aftermath of last week’s terrorist attacks in Paris by Daesh, Israel is busy, exploiting this diversion of attention to further expand its settlements in East Jerusalem.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has recently approved the construction of 454 new housing units in two settlements, Ramat Shlomo and Ramot, in occupied East Jerusalem in a deliberate act of provocation not only of the Palestinians but of the global community as well.

This latest Israeli defying of international law comes while there is some movement to quell the violence ranging in the West Bank between Israelis and Palestinians, now in its fifth week.

The Israeli defiance is also taking place just after the European Union took the decision to have Israeli products manufactured in illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem labelled as such in an expression of disapproval of the continued Israeli occupation and colonisation of Palestinian lands.

Israel must be made to understand that the world will not lose sight of its provocation in the Palestinian territories even as world attention is focused now on the acts of terror committed by Daesh.

Israel cannot be allowed to get away with continued defiance of international law; the world cannot claim to be conveniently busy elsewhere and turn a blind eye to its transgressions.

It is time to grant the Palestinians the right to form their own independent state on Palestinian land. Failure to do so has for the longest time been reason for violence in the region.

Israel must be made aware that continuing to deny the Palestinians their inalienable rights would only add to the ranging fires in the area, whose spread could engulf it as well.
