United to maintain security

Jan 22,2015 - Last updated at Jan 22,2015

Jordan’s border patrol units have recently seized a huge cache of weapons coming across the tense Syrian-Jordanian border.

The Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army have disclosed that no less than 1,400 weapons were found in a vehicle driven by individuals trying to smuggle them into Jordan.

It is not the first time that Jordanian army personnel intercepts weapons that come from Syria and it will not be probably the last.

Their vigilance and professionalism can only be commended.

Repeated attempts to bring guns and ammunition into Jordan from neighbouring countries could be attributed either to smugglers who use the Kingdom in transit to other countries or to evil-meaning individuals, or countries, that wish to upset the country’s security and stability.

Jordan’s position on conflicts — all conflicts — has been consistently wise and reasonable. The Kingdom believes in political, not military, solutions and has said so in no uncertain terms.

If some entertain different notions, it is their problem. Attempts at smuggling weapons into Jordan, however, become a Jordanian problem, and culprits have to be punished exemplarily.

Jordan stands out as one of very few countries in the region that enjoys domestic peace and security.

That might not be to the liking of some who would want to see Jordan also become fertile ground for terrorists or recruiters for sinister causes.

This is not going to happen, for Jordanians are firmly behind efforts to protect their homeland against all misguided designs and evil threats.

As long as the people of the country remain united and vigilant, and authorities behave with the competence they are known for, there is no fear that some foolish goons will succeed to rock the country’s stability and security.
