AMMAN — The 19th Arab Association of Urology (AAU) Congress and the 13th Jordanian Association of Urological Surgeons (JAUS) Conference kicked off on Thursday in Amman.

The regional conference brings together distinguished medical professionals from the Arab world to provide a comprehensive overview of the latest developments in the field of urology.

“Jordan is honoured to be the bridge which brings together local, regional and global medical professionals to take part in this conference,” JAUS President Rami Al Azab said during the event.

He noted that the value of these conferences lays in their ability to encourage knowledge sharing between colleagues.

In his remarks, the AAU President Abdulqadir Al Zarooni said that the annual meetings, conferences and workshops of the association, which was launched in 1995, aim to create a strong professional relationship between Arab urologists, allowing them to exchange experiences and continually develop their knowledge and skills.

Yasser Farahat, chairman of the ASU, which was launched in 2017 as the AAU’s educational arm, also spoke during the conference’s opening.

In his remarks, Farahat noted the importance of continuous learning and professional development in the medical field, where “the doubling time of knowledge is less than two and a half months”.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the AAU organised more than 18 online webinars in one year. It also created its own e-learning platform to give access to recordings of surgeries, lectures and publications, added Farahat.

Moreover, he noted that the association also offers mentorship programmes for emerging neurologists that focus on scientific research and hands-on training.

The AAU, which holds its annual conferences in various countries around the Arab world, also regularly takes part in international conferences, including the annul meeting of the American Urological Association (AUA), the annual congress of the European Association of Urology (EAU) and the annual congress of the Société Internationale d’Urologie (SIU), according to Farahat.

The scientific programme of the two-day conference includes lectures and panel discussions covering a wide range of topics related to robotic and minimally invasive surgery, pediatric, female and functional urology, novel Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) surgeries, lithiasis and oncology.

It also features an exhibition showcasing the latest medical equipment, discussions of various scientific studies, courses and hands-on workshops.
