22 parties call for new election, political parties laws

AMMAN — Political parties on Tuesday called for an election law and by-law that encourage political action and ensure parties a key role in the Parliament and government formation.

In a joint statement by 22 parties, after concluding a meeting of a preparatory committee on the political situation and status of parties, they called for building on the achievements of some political and partisan movements in this regard, through presenting a comprehensive proposal to the government.

The only way to realise a national renaissance, at all levels, is by committing to national constants, the parties said, as quoted by the Jordan News Agency, Petra.

They also called for enhancing public participation in decision making and asset administration, as well as boosting the concept of peaceful rotation of authority as stipulated in the Constitution under the rule of the Hashemite leadership.

The statement suggested establishing an independent partisan commission to run parties’ meetings and coordinate political stances on major national issues.

They also called for encouraging political parties that have similar ideologies and programmes to form alliances that can represent the political trends of Jordanians and build election tickets involving candidates from the entire Kingdom.

According to the Ministry of Political Development and Parliamentary Affairs, there are around 47 political parties registered with the ministry.

The most recent law governing partisan action was in 2015, stipulating that the number of members should not be fewer than 150 people.

In the Designation Letter to Prime Minister Omar Razzaz last year, His Majesty King Abdullah called for continuing with efforts to achieve “political reform and build on what has been achieved in previous years. A review of legislation governing political life is needed to bolster the role of political parties and enable them to have a more effective presence at the House of Representatives. Governorate and municipal councils must also be supported and empowered to uphold their duties for the benefit of citizens across Jordan”.
