Up to 30cm of snow expected by Thursday morning — ArabiaWeather

AMMAN — The Kingdom witnessed a severe drop in temperatures on Wednesday, falling 10 degrees below the annual average, along with persistent gusts of wind, according to ArabiaWeather.

Greater Amman Municipality Spokesperson Nasser Rahamneh said that since the onset of extreme weather conditions, the municipality dealt with 65 incidents as of Tuesday evening.

Most of the incidents had resulted from heavy gust of wind reaching more than 100 kilometres per hour, the spokesperson said.

The incidents also included vehicles swerving on slippery roads, power outages and manhole problems.

He urged the public to take precautions in light of expected inclement weather conditions and contact 065359970 or 065359971 or on the mobile phone 078166789 in the event of an emergency.

GAM urged the public to steer clear from areas prone to torrent formation. The municipality called on construction contractors to secure building materials.

Snow accumulation could reach up to 30 centimetres by Thursday morning, ArabiaWeather said, noting that it could be higher in some northern areas.

The Civil Defence Department (CDD) and the Public Security Directorate have set “a clear plan” to cope with the weather conditions, coordinating with municipalities to deal with any increase of water levels and snow accumulation.

The CDD Director Brig. Gen. Anwar Tarawneh urged the public to stay home except unless necessary. He also stressed the dangers of improper use of heating devices at homes.

The cold front started impacting the Kingdom on Tuesday night and is forecast to continue until Thursday morning. Snow accumulation is expected in areas higher than 800 kilometres above sea level.
