AMMAN — A reprint of the 43rd issue of Al Qibla newspaper, the mouthpiece of the Great Arab Revolt, is distributed with Monday’s Jordan Times issue.
The newspaper, which was printed in Mecca a century ago, dedicated its editorial to proudly describe a parade in Mecca of new recruits in the forces of the revolt.
According to the paper, the volunteers had pressured King Hussein to accept them as soldiers in the anti-Turkey rebellion.
In the previous issue, Al Qibla reported that people from Mecca met with the King and asked his permission to join the forces of the revolt. The King responded with a speech that was published in full.
Issue 43 included local news, reports on Turkey and military developments of the revolt and WWI.
The distribution of the paper (1916-1924) by The Jordan Times and other local dailies is part of celebrations of the centennial of the Great Arab Revolt.
In its coverage of the situation in Turkey and its allies in the war, the paper customarily highlights the deteriorating living conditions in these countries, and the oppressive policies of the Turkish government in Arab and Muslim countries under its rule.
