AMMAN — As the new amendments to the Execution Law No. 9 of 2022 came into force on June 2, the law enforcement departments commenced taking action to amend the imprisonment terms of civil debtors to comply with the new amendments, the Jordanian Judicial Council said on Saturday.

Walid Kanakrieh, secretary general of the Judicial Council, said that the new amendments have lowered the penalty of debtors who fail to repay from 90 days in prison per debt to 60 days, capping the number of days to not exceed 120 per year, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

He added that the execution departments have issued some 120 release notes for debtors with debts of more than JD100,000 who spent more than the reduced period of imprisonment in correctional centres in accordance with the new amendments, while 89 people had been released.

The others are not eligible for release as they are serving more than one sentence, he noted.
