Body of battered Indonesian domestic helper to be sent to her country

AMMAN — The body of  a 29-year-old Indonesian domestic helper, who was allegedly beaten to death by her employer, will remain at a hospital in Irbid until her next of kin are notified, embassy and medical sources said Sunday.

The employer reportedly beat the victim to discipline her, according to official sources.

A post-mortem examination conducted by a team of pathologists headed by Ali Shotar at the Irbid National Institute of Forensic Medicine concluded that the victim died of a brain haemorrhage.

The pathologists detected bruises on different parts of her body that were caused by a blunt object and there were two old bruises as well, a medical source told The Jordan Times on Sunday.

An official from the Indonesian embassy in Amman said the embassy is following up on the incident with the Jordanian authorities.

“We were informed that the victim was badly beaten by her employer and that she died as a result,” the official said.

The victim had been working for the same family since 2009, according to the embassy official.

“We have strong faith in the Jordanian justice system and that the perpetrator will get the appropriate punishment,” the embassy official added.

Once the body is released by the Jordanian side, the embassy official said, “we will work to send her back to Indonesia.”

“We are currently working to notify the victim’s family.”

The Criminal Court prosecutor issued orders for the suspect to be detained at a women’s correctional and rehabilitation centre pending further investigation, a judicial source said.
