AMMAN — Deputising for His Majesty King Abdullah, Jordan’s Ambassador to Palestine Khaled Shawabkeh on Sunday attended the midnight mass at the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

During the mass, attended by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Shawabkeh delivered the greetings of His Majesty and Jordanians to Arab Christians, whom he said are an integral component of the social fabric of the Jordanian and Palestinian communities.

For his part, Abbas highlighted the depth of bilateral relations and commended King Abdullah’s role in safeguarding Islamic and Christian sites in Jerusalem.

Shawabkeh visited Orthodox Church Patriarch Theophilos III and delivered His Majesty’s greetings to him on the holiday and to all Christian sects.

Also on Sunday, Prime Minister Hani Mulki wished Christians in Jordan a merry Christmas during a visit to Saint Mary of Nazareth Church in Amman, accompanied by several ministers.

During the visit, Mulki met with Christian leaders and clergymen representing the various sects in Jordan, and said that everyone must be united and vigilant against the “plans of terrorists and criminals who wish to bring harm to the Kingdom”.

Catholic Bishop of Jordan Maroun Lahham said church leaders in the Kingdom have called for limiting Christmas celebrations to religious rituals to mourn the security personnel and civilians who were killed in the recent terror attacks on Karak, noting that Christians are praying for Jordan to remain stable and united.

Despite the destruction and violence surrounding the Kingdom, it remains a safe and secure place of harmonious living, Lahham added, stressing how hundreds of thousands of Arabs have sought refuge in Jordan, escaping violence and murder.

The church leaders  said the Karak terror attacks, which resulted in the murder of 14 security personnel and civilians and the injury of around 46 people, proved that terrorists and their ideologies have no place in Jordan.
