AMMAN — The Transport Ministry will ensure that the companies that use ride hailing apps Uber and Careem commit to acquiring a licence and insurance, the minister, Hussein Al Souob, said on Tuesday.
Speaking at a meeting with the Senate Finance Committee, Souob said these measures will be taken in cooperation with Tourism Ministry and the Public Security Department (PSD), noting that yellow cabs will also be allowed to use these apps, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported
The growing use of Uber and Careem apps has triggered a controversy not only in Jordan but also in many countries, where cab drivers have also protested frequently.
Some cities such as Dubai reached a deal allowing riders to book taxis through Careem.
Also at the meeting, attended by representatives of companies affiliated with the ministry, Souob outlined the challenges that face the transport sector in light of the closure of Jordan’s border crossings with Iraq and Syria.
The crossings have been closed due to the security situation in Syria and Iraq, which resulted in losses for land and airfreight companies, according to Petra.
Discussions also covered the sector’s budget, projects and development plans.
