AMMAN — The Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission (EMRC) on Monday said that composite gas cylinders are still undergoing testing and evaluation, stressing that no licences have yet been issued for filling or trading the cylinders in the local market.
In remarks to the Jordan News Agency, Petra, the EMRC said that the approval process is being handled within a comprehensive regulatory and technical framework that prioritises public safety.
It added that investment in the sector remains open in line with existing legislation, but that storage, transport and distribution activities will be limited to licensed operators.
EMRC said that it would officially announce any licensing decisions and the date of market rollout in advance to ensure transparency.
Also, Jordan Standards and Metrology Organisation (JSMO) Spokesperson Salem Jbour stressed that all technical procedures to verify compliance of the imported composite cylinders have been completed in accordance with the approved technical regulation.
He said that testing covered pre-production, production and post-production stages, as well as samples taken at customs and examined at the Royal Scientific Society, with results confirming compliance.
The cylinders are now at the licensing completion stage, he added.
Jbour noted that the empty composite cylinder weighs about 5 kilogrammes, compared with 17 kilogrammes for a traditional steel cylinder, while holding the same gas capacity.
He added that the cylinders meet high safety standards and have been in use for more than 20 years in over 100 countries worldwide.
