Consumers rejoice as fuel prices drop by 14%

AMMAN – The government on Wednesday lowered the prices of fuel products for January by nearly 14 per cent, a drop welcomed by the Lower House and consumers.

The price of cooking gas, used in winter for heating purposes, was also included in this government monthly pricing update for the first time since subsidies on fuel prices were removed in November 2012.

The price of the 12-kilogramme gas cylinder was reduced from JD10 to JD8.75.

According to the new prices, one litre of unleaded 90-octane gasoline will be sold at JD0.59, down from JD0.690 the month before, while 95-octane costs JD0.735, down from JD0.835 per litre.

The price per litre of diesel and kerosene was put at JD0.46, down from JD0.545.

Head of the Lower House’s Energy and Mineral Resources Committee Jamal Gammoh welcomed the rate the government lowered fuel products by, adding it reflected the real drop in global oil prices.

“We are very comfortable with the decline and the level prices went down to,” Gammoh told The Jordan Times over the phone.

Consumers also expressed satisfaction over the drop the government announced.

Hisham Al Dawood said he had doubts the government was going to reduce fuel prices by such a rate, noting he was anticipating a 10 per cent drop.

According to Ahmad Saeed, a public sector employee, the percentage of the drop in fuel prices has dominated the talk of many households over the past 10 days as people were following news about the issue and following prices of oil in the global market.

“I believe the drop was fair and people needed prices to go down because of winter as consumption usually goes up sharply,” he added.
