AMMAN — Justice Minister Ahmad Ziadat on Sunday said that the implementation of the electronic monitoring system has commenced, after it came into effect in 2022, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The system was established based on Article 25 of the amended Penal Code, which included electronic monitoring as a means to restrict offenders’ movement, he said.

The ministry has purchased 1,500 bracelets to be used for this purpose, he said, adding that 5,000 bracelets can be used in the future if required.

According to the system, if a court issues the decision to place a person under electronic surveillance, it specifies the time period and the geographical scope of the offenders’ movements.

The Public Security Directorate then follows up on the offenders’ compliance with the court’s decision.

By utilising electronic bracelets, Jordan seeks to reduce the ramifications of freedom-depriving penalties and judicial arrests for first time offenders, in order to achieve a preventive policy.
