AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Tuesday met with UNRWA Commissioner General Philippe Lazzarini to discuss the agency's vital role in assisting Palestinian refugees.

Safadi and Lazzarini stressed the urgent need for continued international political and financial support for UNRWA to maintain its vital services to refugees.

Condemning Israel's actions against UNRWA, Safadi expressed rejection of Israel's violation of international law and called for a "swift" global response.

"No other organisation could replace UNRWA's vital role, particularly in Gaza, where Israeli military action against Palestinians continues," Safadi said.

The meeting also covered preparations for an upcoming ministerial meeting in support of UNRWA, which Jordan is co-organised by Jordan and Sweden.

The meeting is scheduled to take place on the sidelines of the 79th UN General Assembly later this month in New York.

Lazzarini thanked Jordan for its unwavering support for UNRWA's mission, particularly in the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza and in mobilising international support for the agency, stressing that this support is crucial to UNRWA's ability to continue its UN-mandated work, providing essential services to more than 5.9 million Palestine refugees in its five operating regions, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.
