AMMAN — German Ambassador Birgitta Siefker-Eberle on Monday awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany to HRH Princess Sumaya for her role in boosting ties between the two countries, according to a statement released by the embassy.

As president of the Royal Scientific Society (RSS) and chairwoman of the board of trustees of the Princess Sumaya University for Technology, she has promoted German-Jordanian cooperation in the areas of education and research, the statement said.

The princess "has personally supported both German Archeological Institutes in Jordan, the German Protestant Institute of Archeology (GPIA) as well as the German Archeological Institute (GAI)", the statement added.

The RSS, according to the embassy, is the official partner of the Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation (FES) in Amman.

"This relationship is an important prerequisite for the work of the FES here in Jordan. Ever since the early 1980s the RSS and FES have been working closely together," the statement said.

Princess Sumaya also "provided temporary facilities at the RSS" for the German-Jordanian University, founded in 2005, before they moved to the current campus in Madaba in 2012.
