Health Ministry launches EU-funded Care project to combat non-communicable diseases

AMMAN — The Ministry of Health, in cooperation with the Jordan office of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) on Thursday launched a 22-million euro EU-funded project titled “Care” to combat and manage non-communicable diseases (NCDs) through offering primary healthcare services in the Mafraq, Ajloun and Tafileh governorates.

Secretary General for Epidemiology and Communicable Diseases at the Health Ministry Raed Shboul said that the Care project supports the health system in service of the Jordanians and Syrian refugees through improving primary healthcare services, providing equipment, in addition to building the capacity of health workers, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Spanish Ambassador in Amman Aránzazu Bañón Dávalo said that cutting mortality rates through prevention and treatment is a strategic framework for cooperation.

“Spain, a EU member and supporter of Jordan, believes that lending the Jordanian government a hand is the best way to move towards achieving sustainable development, and addressing the impacts of the Syrian crisis by enhancing the basic public services,” the ambassador said. 

EU ambassador to Jordan Maria Hadjitheodosiou said that this gesture could help in  addressing the challenges facing Jordan’s health system, including the pandemic.

She noted that the project funded by the EU Regional Trust Fund in Response to the Syrian crisis is meant to enhance the accessibility and efficiency of the primary healthcare system.
