AMMAN — Expanding the southern entrance of Jerash towards Amman highway required removing forest trees, which made the Jerash Agriculture Directorate issue a JD2,950 fine to Jerash Mayor Ali Gogazeh, in his capacity as mayor, and referring him to court, Gogazeh said on Wednesday.

The mayor said that the municipality contacted the agriculture directorate to remove obstacles facing the expansion works, which included buildings, trees and a power convertor, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

An agriculture ranger detected the violation and issued the fine for cutting down 14 trees inside the Jerash national park.

The mayor said that the municipality sent a letter to the directorate on March 14, while Jerash Agriculture Director Abdul Hafeth said that the directorate received the letter on Tuesday, after the trees were cut down.
