AMMAN — A joint committee headed by Senate President Faisal Fayez, on Sunday approved the draft local administration law, as referred by the Lower House, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The joint committee, consisting of the two legal committees and the administrative committee, met with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Local Administration Tawfiq Krishan, Minister of State for Legal Affairs Mahmoud Kharabsheh, and the legal adviser to the Ministry of Local Administration Nidal Adwan.

During the meeting the committee said that the draft law aims to improve the management and supervision of local councils and municipalities.

A technical executive body will oversee the quality of municipalities and local councils’ decisions, as dictated in the law.

The law aims to enhance decentralisation and public participation in decision-making.

The law also seeks to strengthen the “complementary role” of the governorate and municipal councils by defining their authorities and tasks.

According to the law, a training and development institute will be established to enhance the capabilities of the heads and members of provincial and municipal councils.
