Jordan condemns Israeli settlement expansions

AMMAN — Jordan on Monday condemned the Israeli government's decision to build additional settlements and to "legalise" settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Sinan Majali stressed that such Israeli measures can lead to further escalation and violence that “all will pay for”, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

Majali urged the international community to take immediate and decisive action to put an end to unilateral Israeli procedures that undermine all opportunities to realise peace, stressing the need to oblige Israel to respect international legitimacy and shoulder its responsibilities as the occupying force.

He reiterated that expanding the construction of settlements and displacing Palestinians from their homes is “a flagrant violation” of international law and international legitimacy resolutions, particularly UN Security Council Resolution No. 2224.

The spokesperson stressed that the unilateral procedures carried out by Israel, as the occupying power, such as building and expanding settlements, confiscating land and displacing Palestinians, are illegal, rejected and condemned practices that represent a serious violation of international humanitarian law.

Such procedures undermine the foundations of peace, efforts to resolve the conflict and opportunities to achieve the two-state solution based on international legitimacy resolutions, Majali said.
