Jordan 'failing to provide decent work’, watchdog claims

AMMAN —Jordan was the first Arab country to sign an agreement with the International Labour Organisation, but work conditions in the Kingdom have not met the standards of decent work, Jordan Labour Watch (JLW) said on Wednesday.

On the occasion of the World Day for Decent Work, celebrated annually on October 7, the JLW, affiliated with the Phenix Centre for Economic and Informatics Studies, issued a report on the availability of decent work in the Jordanian labour market.

The report showed that repercussions of regional turmoil on the national economy led to a decline in economic growth rates and affected the capacity ability to generate jobs, according to a JLW statement.

In this regard, the group said the Jordanian economy provided around 70,000 jobs in 2007, which declined to 53,000 in 2013, and reached nearly 17,000 jobs in the first half of 2015.
