AMMAN — Minister of Social Development Wafa Bani Mustafa on Sunday patronised an event marking the 25th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security.

Organised by the Jordanian National Commission for Women (JNCW) in cooperation with the Ministerial Committee for Women’s Empowerment and UN Women in Jordan, the event brought together ministers, senior officials, ambassadors, members of Parliament, representatives from the security and military sectors, civil society, international organisations, and media outlets.

Bani Mustafa, representing the Prime Minister, said that Jordan recognises the essential role of women in maintaining peace and security, highlighting that the Kingdom was one of the first Arab countries to adopt a national plan to implement Resolution 1325, earning praise from the UN Secretary-General, according to a ministry statement.

She noted that the second national plan expanded its scope to include the justice and diplomatic sectors, as well as crisis prevention and response, climate change, and emergency management.

The plan also ensures gender-sensitive social protection services for all women and girls in Jordan, including refugees, she added.

The minister stressed Jordan’s longstanding leadership in supporting UN peacekeeping missions and its continuous efforts to achieve global stability.

She added that the Kingdom is currently reviewing its legislation and national policies to strengthen women’s participation in peace and security.

Bani Mustafa also pointed to Jordan’s membership in the Arab Women Mediators Network, launched by the Arab League to enhance the role of women diplomats in conflict prevention and peaceful resolution.

She highlighted Jordan’s humanitarian diplomacy and its commitment to hosting refugees despite limited resources.

JNCW Secretary-General Maha Ali said Jordan remains a regional pioneer in adopting and implementing the Women, Peace and Security agenda, noting that the national plans promoted women’s participation in the military, security, justice, and diplomatic sectors, strengthened institutional capacity, and established women’s empowerment units in several institutions.

Assistant President of the Senate Suhair Al Ali reiterated that the Senate supports women’s empowerment through legislation that strengthens their role in peacebuilding and ensures national institutions allocate budgets to implement the national plan effectively.

First Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Hala Jarrah stressed that women’s participation is not optional but essential for achieving lasting peace and sustainable development, while UN Women Representative Nicolas Burniat commended Jordan for transforming global commitments into tangible national achievements through inclusive partnerships supported by Canada, the UK, Finland, Spain, Norway, Cyprus, and France.

Canadian Ambassador Louis-Martin Aumais said that women’s peace and security are fundamental to achieving overall stability, noting that inclusion strengthens resilience and defence.

The event featured four panel discussions addressing women’s participation in peace and security, crisis response, humanitarian and social services, and the role of education, media, and youth in promoting gender equality and preventing violence.

A short film showcased Jordan’s milestones in implementing Resolution 1325, and the Jordan Armed Forces –Arab Army Band performed patriotic pieces to conclude the ceremony.
