Jordan, Syria discuss cooperation in oil, electricity fields

AMMAN — Jordan and Syria on Wednesday discussed cooperation in the oil and electricity fields and means to enhance them in a way that serves both countries’ interests.

During a meeting held in Amman between Energy Minister Hala Zawati and Syrian ministers of oil and natural resources Bassam Tameh and electricity Ghassan Zamel, both sides reviewed the status of the electric grid connection and the condition of the infrastructure of the Arab gas pipeline between Jordan and Syria.

Discussions also went over means to boost cooperation in renewable energy and energy efficiency fields, according to a ministry statement.

Zawati highlighted the importance of activating energy cooperation in a way that serves economic integration towards realisng the interests of Amman and Damascus.

In this regard, the minister reviewed cooperation aspects in natural gas and the importance of rehabilitating the infrastructure of the Arab gas pipeline, stressing the significance of the electric connection between the two countries.

She also reviewed the Jordanian experience in the renewable energy and energy efficiency field, highlighting the importance of benefitting from such expertise.

Tameh noted that both sides went over cooperation aspects in the gas field through the pipeline and the technical conditions of the pipeline and the possibility of using it to transfer gas.

Zamel said that discussions addressed means to rehabilitate the electric connection line as part of the Arab electric connection line, noting that a plan will be prepared soon to rehabilitate it.
