Jordanian released from Israeli jail after 10-year imprisonment

AMMAN — Israeli authorities released Jordanian prisoner Munir Qasim last Thursday after 10 years of imprisonment, an activist said Monday.

Qasim went to Balaa Village in Tulkarm in 1995 to work as a carpenter, and Israeli forces arrested him in October 2005 on charges of resisting the occupation, according to Shireen Nafe, a member of the media team supporting Jordanian prisoners in Israel, Fedaa.

The 40-year-old Jordanian was charged with shooting at Israeli soldiers, making explosives and forming a military cell affiliated with Hamas, according to a Fedaa statement.

“Qasim travelled to the West Bank on a visit visa and he could not return to Jordan between 1995 and 2005,” Nafe told The Jordan Times, expecting him to arrive in Jordan in early December due to Israel’s “complicated procedures”.

“The freed prisoner was in good health upon his release,” Nafe confirmed, noting that he is married to a Palestinian woman from Balaa, his family’s hometown, and the couple has two daughters.

She said Qasim has not seen his family, who reside in Irbid, since he left the Kingdom in 1995, because of his illegal status in the West Bank.

The Fedaa statement quoted Qasim as saying that the last time his two daughters visited him was two years ago through the International Committee of the Red Cross.

With Qasim’s release, there are now 24 Jordanian prisoners in Israel, Nafe noted.
