Minister of Justice Bassam Talhouni

AMMAN — The Ministry of Justice, in cooperation with the Ministry of Social Development and the Public Security Directorate, has organised a campaign to provide correction and rehabilitation centres and care centres with sanitation items to confront the spread of the coronavirus.

This initiative is being implemented in coordination with the USAID-funded Rule of Law Programme (ROLP) in Jordan and the Penal Reform International Rule of Law/PRI MENA office to support “the great efforts exerted in the Kingdom” through its official, private and voluntary sectors to combat the global pandemic, according to a statement from the Ministry of Justice.

Minister of Justice Bassam Talhouni said that the campaign, launched under the slogan "Protect yourself ... protect others", aims to provide inmates in correction and rehabilitation centers and care centres affiliated with the Ministry of Social  Development — including persons with disabilities, children without guardians, women, victims of domestic violence, persons deprived of their liberty and persons lacking support — with personal protection materials and basic sterilisation items to mitigate the risk of the COVID-19 pandemic spread and to limit the possibility of its transmission, the statement said.

Talhouni added that the campaign is part of the efforts exerted by the government to confront the coronavirus and stems from its belief in the need to direct support to the groups most in need of preventive materials, especially inmates of correction and rehabilitation centres, children without  family support and victims of domestic violence.

Talhouni stated that the campaign aims to provide 13,000 inmates at correction and rehabilitation centres across the Kingdom and 1,066 persons housed at care centres affiliated to the Ministry of Social Development with needed sanitation and hygiene materials and non-medical supplies for personal protection.

The minister also said that, as part of the joint initiative, awareness brochures were also distributed to prevent the spread of COVID-19, in accordance with World Health Organisation guidelines
