Lawyers to monitor elections — bar association

AMMAN – At least 300 lawyers will apply to observe the September 20 parliamentary elections, a step perceived by their syndicate as a “major” contribution to the integrity of the polls.

“For the first time in the history of the Jordan Bar Association, we will take part in monitoring the elections,” association council member, Walid Adwan, told The Jordan Times on Sunday.

He noted that Independent Election Commission (IEC) President Khaled Kalaldeh had welcomed the idea of lawyers observing the polls, during a recent lecture at the bar association.

“We all know that lawyers are very well acquainted with the law and thus, more capable than anyone else to detect violations and ensure the application of the regulations,” noted Adwan, who is also president of the syndicate’s freedom and human rights committee.

Lawyers can apply to observe the polls until August 30, he said, adding that 230 had registered so far.

“We are very excited to be part of this. We will certainly contribute to ensuring the integrity of the elections,” Adwan highlighted.

IEC officials were unavailable to comment on the issue despite several attempts by The Jordan Times to contact them.

Local and international observers from various NGOs are expected to monitor the upcoming elections.
