LNG terminal begins experimental pumping to electricity stations

By Petra - Jun 27,2015 - Last updated at Jun 27,2015

AMMAN — Energy Minister Ibrahim Saif on Saturday announced the start of experimental pumping of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Terminal in Aqaba to electricity generating stations across the Kingdom.

Saif said experimental and operational tests for the floating storage regasification unit  vessel, rented to import LNG to Aqaba, started last week and will continue until July 9. Saif noted that the National Electric Power Company will rely on the gas terminal to secure around 90 per cent of electricity stations’ needs.

The terminal will enable the Kingdom to receive around 490 million cubic feet of natural gas per day, replacing the diesel and heavy fuel oil currently used in power generation.
