AMMAN — Muslim preachers who deliver Friday sermons (Khatibs) will now receive gratuity for their services, said Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Mohammad Khalaileh on Thursday.
“This resolution was rendered back in August and now regular payment has been announced starting next year,” Ministry Spokesperson Hussam Hyari told The Jordan Times on Saturday.
This gratuity is a reward for their “sustained and lasting service”, in order for them to serve the Jordanian community and engage in interfaith programmes, the spokesperson said.
Hyari highlighted the role of imams and preachers in the lives of citizens, and their ability to reach out to youth, noting that these services require support.
“They are an example for all people, so this motivates them to fulfil their vital role in improving the lives of others,” Hyari added.
Both preachers who are affiliated with the ministry and those who are not affiliated are entitled to this gratuity and receive “equal treatement”, he said.
The ministry will “thoroughly consider” establishing a special fund exclusively for preachers affiliated with the ministry to further support them and their families, Hyari said.
The spokesperson also highlighted the ministry’s numerous training programmes for imams and khatibs.
