AMMAN — Jordanian nurses are thinking of forming a political party to “systemise” their contributions to public life, according to their syndicate leader.
Jordan Nurses and Midwives Association President Mohammad Hatamleh told The Jordan Times on Wednesday that a group of “socially active” nurses are in the process of shaping the vision of the projected party.
“Nurses will submit the party’s application to the Interior Ministry once the plan is designed,” he said in a phone interview, noting that the political party is not related to the association in any way and will “completely” abide by the Political Parties Law.
According to the Political Parties Law, any group of Jordanians seeking to form a political party must apply for an Interior Ministry permit; otherwise the party will not be legal.
“These nurses wish to take their public services to a systematic and more organised level that grants them a role in the political arena and allows them to boost their social contributions,” Hatamleh said.
He added that the intended party will be “truly committed to values and ethics”, and carry out “very active field work in all governorates”, noting that the party’s membership will be open to the public, not exclusive to nurses.
Commenting on whether members of the party-to-be will aim for reaching decision-making positions or joining political coalitions, Hatamleh said it is “too early to tell”.
