AMMAN — During his reception of Chairman of the National Committee for International Humanitarian Law retired Lt. Gen. Mamoun Khasawneh on Monday, Prime Minister Omar Razzaz received a copy of the committee’s 2019 annual report.
During the meeting, Razzaz stressed the importance of the cooperation between the committee and the government coordinator for human rights, especially on issues related to wars, conflicts and the protection of civilians, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
The meeting was attended by Minister of Political and Parliamentary Affairs Musa Maaytah and Government Coordinator for Human Rights Abeer Dababneh.
The Prime Minister commended the efforts and role of the National Committee for International Humanitarian Law in clarifying and reinforcing the concept of the law for many ministries and governmental and private institutions.
For his part, Khasawneh provided an overview of the committee’s history and the legislative developments that have accompanied its work system and defined the tasks of its members.
He pointed out that the committee’s job is to implement the mechanisms of international humanitarian law on the national level and to carry out legislative harmonisation in line with the provisions of treaties, noting that Jordan has signed 14 international treaties related to the law.
The chairman also stressed the need for specialised departments in all ministries and government institutions to familiarise themselves with international humanitarian law.
The committee has prepared an academic course on the law, which is taught as a basic graduate studies course at universities, he noted, highlighting similar material in the military science course taught to all university students in the Kingdom.
