AMMAN — Police on Tuesday said that they have arrested the son of a man who allegedly shot and killed one person and injured two others, then barricaded himself at his house and died from a gunshot wound in Amman.
The suspect was engaged in a brawl with some of his neighbours in Ashrafieh neighbourhood on Monday evening, Police Spokesperson Lt. Col. Amer Sartawi said.
“Police were called to the area, and when our forces arrived, the suspect headed to his house and fired several rounds at his neighbours,” Sartawi told The Jordan Times.
Three people were injured, including one who died on Tuesday, the police official added.
When the force attempted to arrest the suspect, Sartawi maintained, “he barricaded himself inside his house and started shooting at the officers”.
“Our officers returned fire, and when the threat was over, the suspect was dead from a gunshot wound,” he added.
The police official said on Tuesday that the deceased suspect’s son was arrested after investigators concluded that he allegedly fired several shots during the altercations with the neighbours.
“The suspect’s son attempted to escape from the area and was later arrested by the police,” Sartawi added.
The police official said that the incident was the result of a fight between neighbours and that the victim who lost his life was “a bystander who was trying to intervene and stop the fight between the two parties”.
None of the police officers was injured in the incident, according to Sartawi.
Investigators found two weapons at the suspect’s house, including an automatic weapon, according to a statement by the Public Security Directorate.
Several videos went viral showing two men on the roof of a building with one of them holding a long weapon and firing it.
Multiple media outlets and social media users reported that the suspect was a dentist who resided in Ashrafieh.
Sartawi said investigations are ongoing into the incident.
Meanwhile, the Criminal Court’s general attorney issued a gag order banning the press and social media users from writing about the incident or publishing any videos or material related to the incident under legal persecution.
