PSUT teams place 1st, 2nd in Orange 5G Hackathon competition

AMMAN — Student teams from the Princess Sumaya University for Technology (PSUT) won both the first and second places in Orange’s Fifth Generation Hackathon competition.

The PSUT teams’ successes fall under the “Innovation Space” project, a collaborative effort involving the Information and Communications Technology Association of Jordan (int@j) and technical partner Nokia. 

The Orange team, which included student Mosa Abu Mazer from the Department of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at the King Hussein School of Computing Sciences, won first place. In second place was the AIES team, comprising students Ahmed Tariq Hammad, Celine Amjad Qarajeh, Omar Hafez Hourani and Omar Hassan Mustafa.

The SpeedX team, consisting of students Mohammad Abu Areeda, Rami Abdel Halim Abu Kishk, and Maya Mohammad Awwad, and under the supervision of Ammar Odeh, also secured a place among the top six qualified competing teams.

PSUT President Wejdan Abu Elhaija expressed her pride in the students’ accomplishments and achievements. She noted that their success reflects their exceptional dedication demonstrated during the competition. Abu Elhaija also said that the students’ programming skills and inventive solutions affirm the quality of education and training offered by the university, according to a statement from the university.

Ashraf Ahmed, Dean of PSUT’s King Hussein School of Computing Sciences, commended the technical and creative talents of the students who secured first places in their first time in this competition. This accomplishment underscores the alignment between university offerings and market-demanded technical skills, he said.

The “Innovation Space” project is a three-year programme co-funded by the European Union through the “Innovate Jordan” programme. The project aims to foster digital empowerment and cultivate a culture of innovation on a broad scale. The 5G Hackathon helps bolster the ideas of innovators by utilising 5G technology in specific sectors. This approach enhances their skills, unlocks fresh possibilities and prepares Jordanian youth for forthcoming digital change.
