AMMAN — The Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission (EMRC) on Saturday endorsed a map that shows radiation levels in the Kingdom, created from hundreds of soil samples.
EMRC Chief Commissioner Farouq Hiari said the map was essential to monitor any changes in radiation and to protect the public and the environment.
The map shows the levels of natural and industrial radioactivity across the Kingdom, Hiari said in a statement.
To create the map, the commission collected 803 soil samples over six months from areas that were selected based on population density and previous field studies, he explained.
The samples were analysed by specialists at the commission’s laboratories, he added.
The EMRC has established radiation monitoring stations in several regions across the Kingdom and at 12 border crossings to make sure no radioactive material enters the country.
The commission is committed to monitoring radiation risks in order to protect the public and the environment, the statement said.
