AMMAN — Specialists from the ministries of energy and agriculture on Tuesday discussed plans to use small-scale renewable energy technologies to support entrepreneurial development and gender mainstreaming in productive sectors in rural areas.

Director of Electricity and Rural Electrification at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Ziad Al Saeedah highlighted the importance of the initiative during a forum organised by the United Nations Economics and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

This forum was a part of the 11th International Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development’s “Regional Initiative for Promoting Small-Scale Renewable Energy Applications in rural areas of the Arab Region (REGEND).

The REGEND aims to improve livelihoods and achieve economic benefits, social inclusion and gender equality in Arab rural communities, notably marginalised groups, through addressing energy poverty, water scarcity, vulnerability to climate change, and other challenges related to natural resources.

According to Radhia Sedaoui, the chief of energy section at the ESCWA, the initiative included a number of energy projects supporting some 850 beneficiaries in the southern governorates of Karak and Maan.
