Safadi meets Iranian counterpart, discusses Israeli aggression on Gaza, national security threats

AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Ayman Safadi on Wednesday met with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir Abdollahian over the outcomes of the meetings held by the ministerial committee formed by the Joint Arab-Islamic Summit with international officials to garner international support to halt the Israeli aggression on Gaza.

During the meeting, held on the sidelines of the Global Refugee Forum in Geneva, Safadi underscored the immediate need to stop the Israeli aggression and provide urgent humanitarian aid to the besieged strip, according to a ministry statement. The minister also stressed the need for the international community to bear its legal and moral responsibility in taking a decisive position to stop the war on Gaza, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.

Safadi and Abdollahian also went over the recent developments in Syria, where the former warned of the ongoing attempts to smuggle drugs and arms from Syria into Jordan. Safadi asserted that the Kingdom is prepared to take all necessary measures to safeguard national security, including striking criminals threatening Jordan's stability. 

He added that those responsible for the recent attack on Jordan’s security forces on Tuesday that resulted in the death of Captain Iyad Nuaimi and the injury of one of the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army (JAF) personnel, will be held accountable and will "pay the price of their attack and crime".

Also on Wednesday, Safadi met with Qatari Minister of State for International Cooperation Lolwah Rashid Al Khater over the catastrophic conditions in Gaza and cooperation means to deliver humanitarian assistance to the besieged strip.

During the meeting, the two ministers reiterated the need to intensify efforts to reach a full ceasefire and ensure the delivery of sufficient humanitarian aid to the Palestinians in Gaza.

They also highlighted the need to continue cooperation between the two countries in various fields as per the directives of His Majesty King Abdullah and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani.

Also on the sidelines of the forum, Safadi met with German Minister Economic Cooperation and Development Svenja Schulze over the dangerous developments in Gaza, efforts to halt the war and its catastrophic repercussions and ensuring the protection of civilians.

Safadi stressed the importance for the international community to bear its legal and humanitarian responsibility and launch an immediate and effective international effort to stop the war on Gaza.

The two ministers went over existing cooperation between the two countries and the support Germany provides to Jordan. They also called for the international community to bear its responsibility regarding Palestinian refugees.
