AMMAN — Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Ayman Safadi and Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Antonio Tajani on Thursday held expanded talks in Rome focusing on ways to strengthen bilateral relations.
Talks also went over cooperation in addressing regional challenges in preparation for His Majesty King Abdullah’s official visit to Italy scheduled for next week, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.

Safadi and Tajani underscored the importance of the two countries' “historical friendship” and their enthusiasm to translate it into broader cooperation in the economic, investment, tourism, agricultural and defence arenas.

Safadi expressed appreciation of Italy’s support in helping the Kingdom address the economic challenges and repercussions of regional crises.
Tajani stressed that his country sees Jordan as a “key partner” in the region, and highly values King Abdullah's efforts to achieve security and stability.
The two ministers also noted the importance of efforts to achieve stability, security and peace, which are essential to the steadiness of the region and the Mediterranean neighbourhood.

Safadi also expressed appreciation of Italy's support for the two-state solution, stressing the dangerous situation in occupied Palestinian territories caused by a continued stall in peace efforts and the absence of any real prospect for achieving just and comprehensive peace on the basis of the two-state solution in accordance with the international legitimacy resolutions and accredited references.

He stressed the need to return to serious and effective negotiations to achieve the two-state solution and to stop Israel's illegal actions that undermine peace efforts before confidence in the peace process can be restored and the violence can be stopped.

The two ministers also discussed efforts to find a political solution to the Syrian crisis. Safadi briefed his Italian counterpart on the Jordanian proposal to launch collective Arab efforts to find a solution that ends the crisis, guarantees Syrian unity, sovereignty and cohesion, and addresses all its consequences.
The ministers also discussed joint efforts to combat terrorism and address the refugee issue.

In this regard, Safadi stressed the significance for continued international support for refugees and their host countries. Addressing the challenge of refugees and migration requires solving the crises that caused them and providing support to refugees in the region, Safadi said.
The two ministers agreed to continue to coordinate strategies to increase cooperation for common challenges.

Jordanian-Italian relations date back to 1949, and Italy is Jordan's second-largest trading partner in Europe. This year, Italians made up the largest number of tourists arriving in Jordan from Europe, the statement said.

Safadi also met with Speaker of the Italian House of Representatives Lorenzo Fontana and President of the Italian Senate Foreign Affairs Committee Stephanie Craxi and briefed them on the Kingdom’s stances on various regional issues and Jordan’s political, economic and administrative reforms.
He also discussed prospects to enhance bilateral relations as well as the latest developments in the region.
