Omari sworn in as head of Cassation Court

AMMAN (Petra) - Ishmail Saleh Mustafa Omari was sworn in as head of the Court of Cassation before His Majesty King Abdullah on Thursday. A Royal Decree was issued yesterday, appointing Omari to the post as of November 6. Another Royal Decree was also issued, retiring Mohammad Samed Raqqad who was head of the court, upon his request.

Al Hussein University professors to receive housing under Royal makruma

MAAN (Petra) - Prime Minister Nader Dahabi on Thursday announced a new Royal makruma under which Al Hussein Ben Talal University professors will receive housing units in the Jordan Phosphate Mines Company's residential complex. The premier made the announcement during a meeting with the university's board of trustees and its president, Ali Hrout, who presented a briefing on the university where 7,800 students are enrolled. He said the Royal makruma will provide stability for professors and encourage them to live in the area. Meanwhile, Dahabi said the government is looking into a proposed bill to grant universities administrative and financial independence.

 

Dahabi to visit Qatar

AMMAN (Petra) - Prime Minister Nader Dahabi will pay an official visit to Qatar on Saturday. During the two-day visit, the premier is scheduled to meet with Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad Ben Khalifa Al Thani, Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad Ben Jassem Al Thani and several senior officials. Talks will mainly focus on means to develop and foster Jordanian-Qatari ties in the fields of politics, economy and investment.

96 underprivileged families receive homes

AMMAN/ZARQA (Petra) - A total of 96 underprivileged families in Amman and Zarqa on Thursday received new homes under the Royal housing initiative. Yousef Issawi, president of the Royal Initiatives Implementation Committee, presented the families with the keys of the new houses, 46 of them in Amman and 50 in Zarqa. Minister of Social Development Hala Latouf attended the ceremony.

3 inmates admitted to hospital after drinking aftershave

AMMAN (Petra) - Public Security Department Spokesperson Major Mohammed Khatib on Thursday said three Maan Correctional and Rehabilitation Centre inmates were admitted to hospital after drinking aftershave. Two of the prisoners are still in the intensive care unit while the third was released from hospital after receiving treatment, Khatib said. A special investigation panel was established to look into the incidents he added.

 

Mobile phone operators to stops charging 10 fils per SMS delivery report

AMMAN (Petra) - Mobile phone operators announced on Thursday that they will stop charging subscribers 10 fils per SMS delivery report as of Sunday. The decision was announced during a meeting yesterday headed by Minister of Industry and Trade Amer Hadidi and attended by Telecommunications Regulatory Commission Chief Commissioner Ahmad Hiyasat and representatives of the Kingdom’s four mobile operators. The decision stipulates that each operator should individually decide how to address the issue in the future in accordance with the competition and telecommunications laws. The fee considered a violation of the competition law, according ministry’s competition directorate.

University student, Saudi national killed in road accidents

SALT (Petra) - An 18-year Amman Private University student died on Thursday when his car overturned on the Kamalia-Sweileh road. Another three students, two boys and a girl who were in the same car were injured. The police said a sudden lane change caused the accident. Meanwhile, on Wednesday evening, a Saudi national was killed and another injured in a traffic accident on the Mdawara-Maan road. The injured passenger suffered broken bones and bruises, according to Maan Public Hospital Director Abdullah Dweirej.

Senate endorses several laws

AMMAN (Petra) - The Senate on Thursday endorsed several laws referred from the Lower House. These included a temporary law on the budget supplement and a law on the annulment of the Higher Media Council, as well as amendments to the youth affairs, higher education and tourism laws. The Upper House also approved amendments to the Jordanian Medical Association and the Nurses and Midwives Association laws.

Gov’t to distribute 3,300 plots of land

AMMAN (Petra) - The Ministry of Public Works and Housing will allocate 3,300 land plots to the poor, Minister Sahl Majali said during a meeting with the Lower House Financial Committee on Thursday. In addition to the land, the sum of JD5,000 will be given to the owners as grants as well as another JD10,000 in soft loans to help them build homes. During the meeting, Tourism Minister Maha Khatib and Majali briefed the committee members on the budget figures related to their ministries.

108 new lawyers sworn in

AMMAN (Petra) - A total of 108 new lawyers took the oath on Thursday before Minister of Justice Ayman Odeh. Since the beginning of this year, 813 lawyers were sworn in while another 150 are expected to take the oath before the end of the year.
