AMMAN — The Ministry of Education and the Special Communications Commission (SCC) on Monday launched a project to connect public schools, ministry directorates and military education schools to an integrated network.

The step is aimed at utilising technology to increase the efficiency of the educational process by adopting communication solutions and information technology, according to a joint statement.

Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Mohammad Thneibat, SCC Director Brig. Gen. Ali Al Assaf and Umniah CEO Ziad Shatara signed the agreement for the project.

Thneibat said during the event, attended by Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour, that this “noteworthy national project” is an essential step on the road to upgrading educational methods in Jordan.

He added that the implementation of the project is within the strategy to promote the use of modern technology in academia.

Thneibat went on to explain that Umniah will connect around 3,000 schools and sites to computer systems.

This will in turn allow participating schools to provide integrated Internet and communication services to their staff and pupils.

The infrastructure, delivered through MPLS technology, will ultimately provide connectivity speeds ranging between 15 and 50 megabits per second (Mbps), depending on the location, at the highest security and privacy levels, compared to the current speed of only 2 Mbps, according to the statement.

He added that more than 1.5 million students and 80,000 teachers will benefit from this project, which commences this year and continues for five years.

The communications network will provide teachers and students with an interactive learning environment, and will also allow administrators to communicate more easily, expediting decision making, the statement quoted Thneibat as saying.

Furthermore, the agreement includes an electronic protection services such as surveillance camera systems.

Assaf said the SSC, which is supervising the project, said the initiative is a “qualitative addition” to the National Broadband Network implemented by the ICT Ministry.
