Fragmentation is no solution

Jan 26,2016 - Last updated at Jan 26,2016

During an interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria, on the sidelines of the Davos World Economic Forum, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu talked about the Syrian conflict and how he sees it end.

There is no military solution to the Syrian civil war, Netanyahu stated, but when asked how he sees it end, he said that the only answer could be the balkanisation of Syria.

Balkanisation — obviously “inspired” from the model in the fragmented Balkans — means the division of a territory or country into mini states that are hostile to each another.

This is exactly what Israel’s prime minister would like to see in Syria, as it would ensure that the territorial designs of his country see the light of day with no resistance from a strong neighbouring country.

The balkanisation of Syria now, and gradually of the entire region, a process that started with Iraq and slowly seems to move to other countries in the Arab world, would, Netanyahu believes, ensure his country’s security.

If that’s indeed his thinking, Netanyahu shows lack of statesmanship and political savvy.

The fragmentation of the Arab world would transform it into a fertile ground for factions — political, religious, sectarian, at all times showing selfish interests — to strive, and fight and recruit followers to advance their goals.

That would hardly secure Israel’s comfort and security.

If indeed dividing the regions’ countries into mutually hostile mini states is the ultimate strategic objective of Israel, if Syria is indeed heading that way, as Iraq has, due to Arab folly and international silence, what prevents balkansation from spreading to other Arab states where there are large ethnic or sectarian minorities vying for power or self-determination?

Does Netanyahu think that would bode well for his country?

Of course, this grand policy of Israel can be aborted if Arab states get their act together and make national interests top priority, ahead of petty personal interests.

All there is need of is a genuine Arab awakening.
