‘Abysmal failure’ of OIC

Apr 16,2016 - Last updated at Apr 16,2016

The Islamic summit that convened in Turkey last week within the context of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) registered abysmal failure.

This 13th session represented a moral victory for Daesh and other radical groups.

The 49 participants — heads of states and governments — are the richest in the world, as individuals, yet they were supposed to represent the Islamic nation of 1.3 billion, the poorest in the whole universe.

The final communiqué failed to draft a stratagem to solve the problem of the 322 million Muslims living in absolute poverty, under the average daily income of $1.25, according to the OIC figures for 2015.

The summit also failed to come up with a master plan to find jobs or projects for the 22.6 million unemployed Muslims, as per figures until December 2015.

The diabolic poverty and unemployment twin is what Daesh capitalises on when recruiting new jihadists to fill its ranks in Libya, Yemen, Iraq and Syria.

The Islamic summit was a failure since it gave the Palestinians in the occupied territories lip service, without any offer of material support for those who are martyred daily in an effort to defend Jerusalem and the two holy mosques.

It is just another historical irony that the OIC was meant from its inception to defend Palestinian rights.

The Moroccan king called for an Islamic summit in 1968, following the arson in Al Aqsa Mosque, to coordinate efforts of Arab states and Islamic nations to confront future Israeli attacks of Palestinians in Jerusalem and other parts of the occupied territories.

The heads of Arab and Muslim states who responded to the Moroccan king called their meetings in 1969 the Organisation of the Islamic Conference; it was called that way until June 2011, when a different title was found for the same setup whose mission is to be “the collective voice of the Muslim world” and who is supposed to work to “safeguard and protect the interests of the Muslim world in the spirit of promoting international peace and harmony”.

Manifestations of the summit’s failure are not confined to the marginalisation of the Palestinian question, but also the failure to invite some key countries, including Egypt.

During the meetings, no efforts were exerted to start reconciliation between Saudi Arabia and Iran, as representatives of Sunni and Shiite Islam.

The summit was expected to address the issue of violence in the name of our religion and its new breeds.

Surprisingly, the true patrons of terrorism were in the front seats of OIC’s main podium.
