2 men handed 4-year prison terms for attempted murder

AMMAN — The Cassation Court has upheld an April Criminal Court ruling, sentencing two men to four years each in prison after convicting them of attempting to murder a man and his son in Amman in April 2019. 

The Criminal Court declared the defendants guilty of attempting to murder a father and his son following a brawl on April 4 in the Nazal suburb and handed them a 12-year prison term.

However, the court decided to reduce the sentence to four years because the victims dropped charges against the defendants. 

Court papers said the defendants engaged in “a heated argument” with the victims and some of their relatives.

“The argument turned into a brawl and the two defendants used a gun and a blunt object in the fight,” court papers said

The victims survived the assault after undergoing surgery at a nearby hospital, the court papers added. 

However, attending physicians at the hospital determined that their injuries were life-threatening and they survived due to medical interference.

The defendants contested the Criminal Court’s ruling arguing that the “prosecution failed to provide solid evidence to convict him with the charges”.

The Criminal Court’s attorney general asked the higher court to uphold the rulings. 

The higher court ruled that the Criminal Court proceedings were accurate and that the defendants were given the appropriate punishment. 

The Cassation Court bench comprised judges Mohammad Ibrahim, Fawzi Nahar, Nayef Samarat, Majid Azab and Hayel Amr.
