Election body rejects 83 candidacy applications

By JT - Jul 12,2017 - Last updated at Jul 12,2017

AMMAN — The Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Wednesday announced that it had rejected 83 candidacy applications filed by would-be municipal and local council members for not meeting requirements.

IEC President Khaled Kalaldeh told the Jordan News Agency, Petra, that each of these candidates would receive a written notification clarifying the reasons behind the denial of the application.

They are entitled under the law to contest the decision by filing an appeal motion with the courts of first instance across the Kingdom as of Thursday through Saturday, July 13-15.

In a related development, the Jordan Bar Association’s (JBA) freedoms committee announced that about 300 lawyers have applied to be a part of monitoring the upcoming elections. The committee said that the door was still open for more volunteers, adding that the JBA would coordinate with the IEC training courses for these lawyers.
