11,540 alleged electricity thefts in 2018’s first seven months

AMMAN — The Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission (EMRC) detected 11,540 alleged electricity thefts through 171,530 inspections by the commission personnel during the first seven months of this year, EMRC announced on Saturday.

EMRC Chief Commissioner Farouq Hiyari said that the number of lawsuits filed with the courts amounted to 1,199 cases in the January-July period, 1,307 of which have been settled, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The EMRC detected 5,654 of the total cases, the public security and gendarmerie department 1,668 and the electricity companies 4,218, Hiyari noted. If convicted, those inducted for electricity theft face imprisonment from six months to two years or a fine of no less than JD2,000 and no more than JD10,000 or both penalties.
