AMMAN — Higher Education Minister Adel Tweisi on Sunday announced that 120 Jordanian students have been granted scholarships to spend the next academic year in Algerian universities, according to a press release by the ministry.

All beneficiaries will be enrolled in medical faculties with a full scholarship covering their tuition fees and other educational expenses, the minister told The Jordan Times in a recent interview.

“This exchange is an implementation of the agreement signed between Jordan and Algeria two years ago, whereby the Kingdom agreed to offer 120 seats per year for Algerian graduate students in exchange for 120 seats for Jordanian students at Algerian universities,” Tweisi explained.

“This is the second time the exchange takes place after last year’s successful round,” the minister continued, noting that the agreement will be automatically renewed every year unless one of the parties expressed their wish to cancel it.

Tweisi praised the hospitality displayed by the Algerian government in taking care of the Jordanian students, noting that the ministry is looking forward to enhancing the cooperation in the educational field.

“This kind of exchange is a regular practice for the ministry and we have similar agreements with other countries,  but Algeria is the second country with which we exchange the highest number of students after Hungary,” the minister highlighted, stressing the “brotherly ties” between the two countries and that “the great political relationship reflects on the educational cooperation”.

Tweisi expressed that the Jordanian students who spent the past year in Algeria were “very happy with their academic experience”, and that Algerian students are “very satisfied with their studies in Jordan”.

In this regard, the minister pointed out that during the past month, the ministry held a meeting with Algerian students to learn about their experience.

Regarding the possibility of further cooperation, Tweisi pointed out that “hundreds of Algerian faculty members spend their sabbatical year in Jordan to benefit from the available research material”, opening a window to further agreements in the research field.
