AMMAN — The Criminal Court prosecutor on Saturday charged two brothers with premeditated murder in connection with the fatal shooting of their mother and the injury of their two sisters in Maan Governorate last week, official sources said.

The three victims received multiple gunshot wounds to different parts of their body allegedly by one of the suspects who fled the scene, a senior judicial source said.

All three women were rushed to a nearby hospital where the mother was declared dead on arrival and the two sisters were taken in for emergency surgery, the senior judicial source told The Jordan Times.

"The two sisters remain in critical condition," according to the judicial source.

In their initial testimony to the authorities, one of the two brothers was allegedly "in need of money and engaged in a heated argument with his father and the second suspect participated as well".

"One of the two brothers grabbed a machinegun and started shooting at his family members, randomly striking the three women in the presence of the second suspect," the judicial source added.

The deceased mother received a fatal bullet wound to the stomach, according to Director of the National Institute of Forensic Medicine Adnan Abbas.

"The bullet hit a major artery and the woman bled to death," Abbas told The Jordan Times.

The suspect, who reportedly used the weapon, fled from the house and was arrested by the police a few hours after the alleged shooting incident, according to the judicial source.

The suspects were ordered detained for 15 days by Criminal Court Prosecutor Baker Quraan at a correctional and rehabilitation centre pending further investigation, the judicial source added.

"Quraan is currently questioning more witnesses in the case," according to the judicial source.
