AMMAN — The Cassation Court has upheld a February Criminal Court ruling sentencing a man to 20 years in prison after convicting him of murdering his relative in Irbid in January 2014.

The Criminal Court declared the defendant guilty of stabbing his relative following an argument with his mother on December 28.  The victim died on January 2 as a result of the wounds he sustained from the attack.

On the day of the incident, the victim engaged in a heated argument with his mother about his mobile, court papers said.

“The victim beat up his mother, took her mobile and she fell on the stairs. The defendant, who saw the incident, followed the victim to the street,” court papers added.

The defendant fought with the victim over the incident, according to court documents, “then pulled a knife and stabbed the defendant in the neck”.

The Cassation Court, which issued its ruling a few months ago, ruled that the Criminal Court’s ruling falls within the law, that the proceedings were proper and that the sentence given was satisfactory.

The court comprised former judges Yassin Abdullat, Daoud Tubeleh, Mohammad Tarawneh, Mohammad Baroudi and Bassem Mubeidin.
