59.7% of youth enrolled in educational institutions — DoS report

AMMAN — As of this year, there are 2.246 million individuals aged between 15 and 24 in the Kingdom, out of an estimated total population of 11.302 million, according to a Department of Statistics (DoS) report issued on Thursday.

The DoS report, published to mark the International Youth Day on August 12, revealed that Amman has a substantial 42 per cent of the total youth population, followed by Irbid with 19.2 per cent and Zarqa with 14.2 per cent.

Adolescents, aged between 15 and 19 constituted the majority of young people, accounting for 50.1 per cent of the total youth population, while young adults, aged between 20 and 24 accounted for 49.9 per cent.

According to the DoS figures, the illiteracy rate among Jordanian youth has declined to only 0.7 per cent. Of the youth, 38.2 per cent hold a high school diploma or higher.

The results also showed that 59.7 per cent of youth is enrolled in educational institutions, while the 11.8 per cent of youth are employed in the workforce.
